Aisen Nikolaev: the development of the Northern Sea Route increases the profitability of deposits in the Arctic

This was stated by the head of Yakutia, Aisen Nikolaev, on the sidelines of the Gaidar Forum during the session "How to revive the legend", dedicated to the state and prospects for the development of geology.

The industry discussion was also attended by Chairman of the Board and General Director of Rosgeo Sergey Gorkov, Head of the Republic of Buryatia Alexei Tsydenov and Prime Minister of the Government of the Republic of Bashkortostan Andrey Nazarov.

As Aisen Nikolaev said, today the Arctic and the ongoing projects there are changing their strategy and logistics, including due to the development of the Northern Sea Route. “This allows us to say that the deposits that already exist and that theoretically can be in the Arctic are becoming absolutely profitable. But at the moment, a significant part of the Yakut Arctic is terra incognita,” said Aisen Nikolaev.

One of the promising areas of development is the cluster approach to the geological study of the territory. As an example, the head of Yakutia named the Kyuchus deposit where with the construction of a low-capacity nuclear power plant there will be opportunities for creating an industrial and technological cluster for the extraction of gold, coal and other minerals.

The session participants also discussed the need for new solutions for the revival and development of geology in Russia. According to Aisen Nikolaev, the industry needs large-scale digitalization, including the use of big data, as well as updating the material base of mining and service companies.

“Today the extractive industries of the republic provide a weighty basis for the well-being and social and economic development not only of Yakutia, but of the whole of Russia,” the head of the republic noted.

Let us recall that the project, called "Geology: the legend revival ", was included in the list of 42 strategic initiatives (projects) approved by the Russian Government. The initiatives were prepared on behalf of the President of the Russian Federation, they are designed to improve the quality of life of people and make the Russian economy more modern and flexible.
