Detox tours and digital tourism will become new areas of Arctic tourism after the pandemic. This view was shared by scientists of the Institute of Economic Problems named after G.P. Luzin of the Kola Scientific Center (KSC) of the Russian Academy of Sciences in their study "Actual aspects of tourism development in the regions of the European North of Russia and the Western Arctic," the KSC RAS reported on Wednesday.

"In the pandemic and post-pandemic periods, it is necessary to pay special attention to the development of active types of natural and ecotourism in sparsely populated places, individual and family tours, car and bicycle tourism. Detox tours and digital tourism will become among the new areas of northern tourism after the restrictions are lifted," the message says.

As scientists clarify, detox tour therapy is a vacation combined with cleansing the body of harmful toxins from large cities in ecologically clean, sparsely populated places in the North. "Digital tourism is an exclusive tourist product with digital technologies. It also has the prospect of developing an innovative type of ecological recreation - plogging ("treasure hunt"), which has been widely developed in Scandinavian countries," they note.

The Kola Science Center (KSC) of the Russian Academy of Sciences published the book "Current Aspects of Tourism Development in the Regions of the European North of Russia and the Western Arctic" by Eduard Grushenko, a researcher at the G.P. Luzin Institute for Economic Problems, and Evgenia Lisunova, a research engineer, dedicated to topical aspects of tourism development in the regions European North of Russia and the Western Arctic. The authors considered the problems of tourism in the Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, Vologda regions and Karelia, as well as the Svalbard archipelago and the Russian Arctic national park, organized on the Franz Josef Land and Novaya Zemlya archipelagos, and suggested ways to solve them.
