Atomflot assessed the prospects for the disappearance of ice in the Arctic

According to forecast estimates, in 2030–2050 ice conditions in the Arctic Ocean will change towards lighter ones, but insignificantly, since these years will have a phase of air temperature decrease during the 74-year fluctuation. This was announced to IA REGNUM by Leonid Irlitsa, first deputy general director, director for shipping of FSUE Atomflot.

In 2018, FGBU AARI made a report for Atomflot entitled “Forecast estimates of the state of sea ice in the period 2030–2050”. According to Leonid Irlitsa, scientists have come to the conclusion that in 2030-2050 the ice conditions in the Arctic Ocean will lighter expected from August to October. There will be no seasonal disappearance of ice cover in the Arctic Ocean by 2050.

The director for shipping of Atomflot noted that ice formation for the first time in the last seven years in the Northern Sea Route water area began two weeks earlier. Already from the beginning of November, on some sections of the route, movement without icebreaker assistance has been impossible.

“It is impossible to imagine the efficient operation of the Northern Sea Route water area without nuclear icebreakers,” added a representative of Atomflot.
