The "Sevmorput" nuclear vessel will perform about three voyages per year starting from 2022

"Sevmorput" is the only operating cargo ship with a nuclear power plant.

The "Sevmorput" nuclear-powered container ship will perform minimum three voyages a year along the Northern Sea Route starting from 2022.  This was announced on Wednesday by the General Director of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) Alexei Rakhmanov.

"From June 2022, the Sevmorput nuclear-powered lighter carrier must make minimum three voyages a year," Rakhmanov said, speaking at an expanded meeting at the State Historical Museum.

"Sevmorput" is the world's largest icebreaker-transport container ship with a nuclear power plant of the KLT-40 type in terms of displacement (61 thousand tons).  The only operating cargo ship with a nuclear power plant.  It was built at the Zaliv shipyard (Kerch) in 1988.  Since 2020, it has been undergoing repairs at the Kanonersky Shipyard in St. Petersburg, which was completed in August 2021.
